Shiepe falls into that category. It is a very well written novel about a famous childhood movie star known as little guy Mike. It all comes to a head for Clay Grant as the child actor gets fed up with his life. His manipulative handlers have gone too far and he can't play the game anymore. A thought came in Clay's mind and he wrote it down. "...scared children-all of us-dealing with adult things-wondering if we are that strong. And everyone wants us to be someone or something else...."

It was his 18th birthday and in his pain he burned some of the toys that depicted his persona "little guy Mike". Before he new it the whole studio was up in flames and he was running not only from the law but from his persona that had enveloped his life. While on the run he ends up in jail and a 71 year old pastor friend Reagon Mitchell bails him out. Reagon is like God in the parable of the prodigal son. He welcomes Clay into his fold with grace and a plan to set both Clay and his son Ted (think older brother) free. How this comes about makes for very entertaining reading and also very inspiring. Lots of relational issues with pain and deep hurts exposed. It's the power of grace working through relationships. A great read.

Review: "The Naked Gospel" by Andrew Farley

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 148px; height: 148px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zgQgqcEuM40/S-FYz13XmXI/AAAAAAAAAIk/XwpTV-KsV5s/s200/naked+gospel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5467749070260377970" />
I really enjoyed the first half of this book. Here he takes on several key issues that most christians believe in and shoots them down. One of these areas is the idea that christians are sinners. This is something preached and believed in by most christians. He lays an excellent groundwork for the work of Christ's sacrifice and how believers are a new creation. They are forgiven etc... He is not the first to declare this but he does it with a lot of clarity. Another key area that he deals with is the difference between the "old man" and the flesh and sin. Farley believes a christian's old man is no longer an issue but the issue is with the flesh and sin. He makes the point that this is very important as it affects how one views themselves. If our old man is present it means we are at war with ourselves so to speak. Again a very good explanation on our identity. He writes very effectively on how the law is not meant for the christian. This is perhaps one of the best points he makes.

The second half of the book Farley seems to start interpreting a lot of verses based on his redemptive theological lens which at times seems to be dancing around what seems to be obvious truth. A term he accuses others of doing. Well I suppose we all do it to some degree. Difficult passages are solved easily by saying they are applied to non christians. The seemingly difficult faith vs works passage in James is easily solved by saying it is referring toward salvation only. Another example is the overcomers in Revelation. These are according to Farley "all christians". His interpretation of 1John on confessing sin does seem however to fit rather well to this lens.

The end of the book was also a bit disheartening as he mentions the signs and wonders in acts were mainly for the lift off of the church and are not really meant for today. He does not go so far as saying he does not believe in them but merely that we now have the written word so we don't need them any more. His next book is also going to explain how those in Heb. 6 who tasted of heavenly gift and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost were really non believers which were enemies of God. Can anyone say more dancing. All in all though it is worth the read just for his excellent treatment of the identity of the believer.

Review: The Book of the Sheperd

Recently read "The Book of the Shepherd" by author Joann Davis.

This small story of fiction exceeded my expectations. It's very short, is set in times of antiquity and yet reveals marvelous nuggets of truth that are very relative in today's world.

The tale begins with a small fellowship consisting of a young shepherd, a boy and a young servant girl. They have grown up in an abusive world where there is a religious fervor to uphold the letter of the law but little compassion for those caught in it's web. They yearn for a new way one that they heard exists but have yet to see. On their journey they encounter many difficulties. The shepherd longs to see this new life of love and grace yet gets drafted in a carnal war. What seems tragic turns into an opportunity to demonstrate what loving your enemy may look like, loved it! Along the way there is the blind man that sees with his heart, and the storyteller that helps the characters share their story and discover who they really are. It really is a great read and one that you can read over and over and discover new truths and hope that is practical and encouraging.

Through the River (Book Review)

Just finished another book review for Viral Bloggers

The title is "Through the River" Understanding your Assumptions about truth. Authors are Jon & Mindy Hirst with Dr. Paul Hiebert.
The book is written to help people of faith better understand how they come to perceive the truth they hold. They use an allegory to depict three different faith cultures and how those environments create a "truth lens" to allow their inhabitants to perceive truth.
Dr. Hiebert was an anthropologist and brings some interesting perceptions regarding how differently something can be viewed depending on ones culture.

The three cultures depicted in the book are the Rock dwellers (Positivists), Island Dwellers (Instrumentalists) and Valley Dwellers (Critical Realists). The Positivists believe the truth to be knowable and needs to be shared. The Instrumentalists are more interested in how the truth is perceived and it is more of a subjective process. The critical realists seeks to find a balance between the two and provide an opportunity for dialogue and an understanding in the context of community.

In the allegory a rock dweller discovers some information that creates a disruption with his/her truth lens and begins to question the adequacy of their lens for interpreting truth. They then enter the river of instrumentalism and try and sort out how this truth applies to their current situation or experience. The book attempts to describe the solution by swimming across the river of instrumentalism and onto the shores of critical realism. Here they are able to hold on to the truth they know and continue to learn the truth they are learning. Supposedly, this view is the cure all for one who has a disruption with their objective truth and finds a lack of solution with the relativism in the river of instrumentalism.

This is probably a great book for a post modernist, not being from that camp it didn't quite strike a chord with me. While it does provide answers to the difficulties in perceiving truth I don't think the critical realists lens is as clear as the authors claim it to be. The sure shore of Critical Realism rather seemed a bit like an island in the river of instrumentalism combining reason and logic with intuition (that was not adequately described) and positivism and hoping that by dialoging together in a group truth will be discovered. I find it a bit disheartening that in a book written to people of faith about truth I can't recall anything written about the Holy Spirit whom Jesus said would lead us into all truth. Truth it seems in the critical realist camp is a process that one learns about. Maybe I'm too mystical but I'm skeptical of a system that attempts to figure out a method of perceiving truth without bringing in the spiritual aspects of it.

Bo's Cafe (book review)

This last week I got the chance to read "Bo's Cafe" new novel by John Lynch, Bill Thrall and Bruce McNicol. The book is published by Windblown Media, for those who don't recognize the name they are the publishers of "The Shack". Here is another fantastic novel that I would have read in two days had I had the time. Like the Shack it is a very well written narrative with lots of great insights concerning difficult situations and recovery in the lives of the characters depicted within the story.
It basically revolves around a community of grace oriented individuals who have come to realize they can't *fix* anyone even themselves but like Larry Crabb (Connecting) they realize that we get healed in relationships where there is openness, trust and protection. So basically it is the story of an individual who is in a marital crisis and his whole world is caving in and he bumps into or begins connecting with Andy (part of the grace crowd at Bo's Cafe). We are taken on a journey of distrust, suspicion, unbelief and then relational connection, openness, sharing and healing in ones deepest parts of their being. It's a really great story of the redemption of one told through the stages of crisis and into a relationship that only grace could enable.

The Diversity Culture

A few weeks ago I received a book from Mike Morrell of the Viral Bloggers to review. The name of the book is "The Diversity Culture" with a tag line of "Creating conversations of faith with Buddhist Baristas, Agnostic Students, Aging Hippies, Political Activists, and everyone in between". I must say I was hoping to get one of the other more interesting titles and well known authors. To my surprise however this was a very interesting and engaging read.

The author is Matthew Raley a Pastor of an Evangelistic Free church in California. He comes across in this book as more of a prophet to that body (evangelicalism) than a defender of its culture. He is clear at bringing out the pitfalls of bigotry, stereotyping, labels etc... that so many of us in evangelicalism are guilty of. He calls this the "reject correct" approach. He doesn't let those in the post Modernism or emerging streams off either as he shows that the "accept-affirm" approach also has its weaknesses. These are just a couple of the great points of tension he writes about in the book relating to the diverse culture we are all in. He then contrasts and compares this tension with the way Jesus related to the women at the well. The dialogue between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well has always been one of my favorite biblical narratives. Raley takes this narrative to new heights as he applies it's principals to how we as Christians can effectively relate to the diverse cultural mindsets that exist in our culture right now.

This would be a great book for Christians to have a discussion about. It's not only current in its relevance but prophetic in its overall message of hope in relating to others of diverse philosophies.

An Organic Wedding

This coming June our son is going to get married. This is not going to be your average wedding. Why do I say that? Well there are many reasons but we can start by saying that Leah had a dream of her wedding with children around her dressed in white and tossing it seems white flowers towards her and her groom. At this point she and Jaron were friends but they had not communicated verbally any feelings toward each other. Incorporating children into the wedding party dressed in white however is not the only reason this is going to be an unusual wedding. It is going to take place at Leah’s folk’s house on a point on a lake in a clearing in the midst of a group of tall pine trees.

The fathers Dean and I are the officiates whatever that will entail for as yet we have not got that far into the story. Hopefully we will get there soon, we have had some marriage counseling take place with Jaron and Leah but it has been far from the ordinary as it has taken place organically in group settings usually with Leah’s parents and Pam and I. These were not times specifically set up for counseling it occurred naturally within our fellowship times. I was actually amazed at how much ground got covered and how many of the “normal” counseling topics got covered.

Jaron and Leah met very naturally within the small fellowship we have between our two families and a few other families. To get the background on how their relationship grew see their story here: http://www.mywedding.com/jaronandleah/index.html and click on “our story”

Have just recently finished reading Frank Viola’s new book “From Eternity to Here”. If you get a chance get a copy of this book you won’t regret it. One of the main points Frank brings out is the eternal purpose of God to have a marriage partner for the son Jesus. The understanding that marriage is a type of this eternal relationship is a very awakening experience in one’s spirit. Oh I know we all seem to have a mental knowledge of this biblical principal but to have it come from the heart / spirit is an altogether matter. As John Eldridge so often says in order to understand the story we have fallen into it is important to understand the context. Well one of the main contexts of story you and I have fallen into is that God has created us for fellowship. Not just fellowship but a very intimate and purposeful relationship best depicted in our rather shallow ability to understand by the marriage relationship. The church corporately is the bride.

When fellow Christians think of the ripening of the fig tree in Mt. 24 before the coming of Jesus Christ they think of physical Israel. This is good and right but Israel is a type of something much more than what is represented by physical Israel. To actually understand what is in the mind and heart of God regarding this we need to have a grasp of the bigger picture/ context and that includes the bride of Christ.

Son 2:12-13 The flowers appear on the earth; The time of the singing of birds is come, And the voice of the turtle-dove is heard in our land; The fig-tree ripeneth her green figs, And the vines are in blossom; They give forth their fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.

Actually it is the bride that is the fulfillment of the type represented by Israel. This is a people not represented by Jewish or gentile roots but by their relationship to the bridegroom. And it appears the voice of the turtle-dove is heard. This is a dove that migrates south in the winter and so isn’t heard until spring. It seems to represent the awakening of the bride to the wooing of the bridegroom. There is much blooming and fresh awakening here depicted showing the response and time of love to be very close at hand.

One doesn’t have to be prophetic to see this happening with the body of Christ as there are so many that are coming into a fuller understanding of the love of God and a fresh understanding of what the ecclesia is today.

Shadow to Substance

Shadow to Substance

It is interesting to comtemplate the story of how Christ mixed spit with dirt and put it on the blind man’s eyes Jn. 9:6. What an unusual display of miracle working power. What was Christ saying through this vivid picture? One would think that putting a mix of spit and dirt on someones eyes would be just the opposite of what a person with eye problems would need. I mean this may be where these cultures years ago got the idea of putting mud gauzes over wounds for healing.

Looking at the context of the story sheds some interesting facts. Jesus did this miracle on the Sabboth. Man he was notorious for working his miracles on the Sabboth, what was with that? I find it interesting that his performing miracles on the Sabboth was akin to putting mud in the spiritual eyes of the Pharisees. It was this mud “performing miracles on the Sabboth” that created such a problem for these religious leaders. It was the fact that he did these works on the Sabboth that seemed to blind them to what he was actually doing and who he actually was. He seemed to be deliberately offending them to show them that they already had something blocking their spiritual eyesight.

Later Jesus describes to the healed blind man that for judgement he came into this world that those that see might be made blind and those that are blind might see Jn.9:39. Very interesting comment in light of the spit and mud healing. Those Pharisees that heard him make this comment asked Jesus if they were blind. His comment to them that they were because they said they saw was very telling. It is interesting to note how a principal or command given by God if held in the wrong light can itself become a substitute for the relationship with God himself. The principal or command must be held with a Christocentric mindset. In other words how does this fit in with God’s ultimate purpose and plan and what is it’s priority. Maybe that is why Jesus told Nicodemus he must be born again he must see things in light of how they relate to Christ not as something in and of themselves, otherwise they may actually cause one to become blind.

How often do we take the things of God and make them into substitutes or something way more than what God intended them to be. Something holy in and of them selves. We call the scriptures Holy. How many have actually substituted a relationship with God with a relationship with a book. At one point Jesus told the Pharisees to search the scriptures for in them you think you have eternal life and yet they are they which testify of me Jn. 5:39. Much of current Christianity looks at Sunday as a holy day where a holy man gives a holy message out of a holy book at a holy hour etc… The truth is when Christ walked among the religious leaders of his day few recognized him because they had religious mud on their spiritual eyes. They had substituted the shadow for the substance. Even Nicodemus was schooled by Jesus that he was missing the very simple things of heaven. Then there is the lady at the well. Where shall we worship? Classic question about relegious mud, which relegious mud is better the mud on this mountain or over in Jerusalem. Interesting to contemplate that Christ is there but she is thinking about where, how, when she should worship when she is standing in the presence of the creator of the universe. Christ comment about the time is coming and now is when the true worshippers shall not be caught up with the shadows whether it is here or there, how etc… but will worship in Spirit and in truth. They will enter into the very substance of true worship.

When we are young we have to be told what to do and what not to do. There are so many things we don’t understand and have no clue as to it’s dangers. This is why God gave us types and shadows to train us 1cor.10:11, heb.10:1. The O.T. is full of these types and shadows. These are akin to what spiritual milk is. Principals and rules etc… to give us help when we are very young. Meat however is partaking of real substance, looking past the type and shadow and into what they represent. God’s desire for his church is to come to full age/maturity able to discern between shadow and substance heb.5:14. Which is why the Lord was so angry at the Pharisees who claimed to see (have meat) but were keeping His people locked into the milk or shadows making them the object of their affections. God is looking for a church which has His values not those who are trying to adhere to the shadows. So Jesus came for judgement to provide water for those who admit they have mud on their eyes and in a sense to offend or put mud (reveal the wrong values) on those who say they see but have not the values of the kingdom but the values of one stuck in the shadows of religion. In another place Christ responded to the Pharisees to go and look up the scripture in Hosea, “I desire mercy and not sacrifice, and the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings”.

Organic Worship

There is a taste with organic vegetables that makes one wonder what is in the industrial grown variety that takes away the natural flavor. I remember the first time we grew our own tomatoes on our deck. It was unbelievable how much flavor there was compared to those offered in the grocery store (that was before they offered organic varieties ha!). It is amazing to me how good the industrial grown fruit / vegetables can look yet it seems to come at a huge expense in terms of quality of taste and benefit. The fertilization process is much different as well as the pesticide usage. Man has found a way to substitue non-organic chemicals which produce a much greater harvest but with less quality.

There are many studies that seem to indicate a lot of our cancer and diseases are a result of some of this tainting of our food supply. I recently heard that cancer has now overtaken heart disease as the number one killer. I think it is interesting to look at the fact that the food which is supposed to give us nutrition and health may actually be doing us harm in some instances. It is a slow process to change traditions once they get established in an industry. Just watched a I love Lucy show where Ricky was smoking a cigarette while singing. That was completely normal back then but for those not from that era it seems so odd. Now of course we have a knowledge of how harmful smoking is to the body.

I find the correlation to these physical truths to be somewhat prophetic of what happens in the spiritual realm as well. Even in Hosea's day God was trying to show Israel that the way they were worshipping was not healthy nor pleasing to him. "Hos. 6:6 For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings." It was not their sacrifices specifically that God was upset about seeing He instigated them. Rather it was the lack of spiritual graces that accompanied them. There was little thought regarding their fellow man and their relationship to God himself. Instead they were busy with a relegious agenda that in their mind was satisfying to God.

Jesus was questioned about his disciples eating corn in the field on the Sabboth by the relegious leaders of his day. He qouted this verse in Hosea to them as a rebuke to their misplaced values. It seems they were more interested in their relegious traditions and letter of the law than in the core values of their neighbor and in relationship with their God. So while they were offering their sacrifices of keeping the sabboth etc... God was looking for values/fruits of righteousness, justice, mercy, love, kindness etc... which can only come from a close relationship with Him.

A good question for us to consider is what does the Lord delight in. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit and contrite heart. Perhaps that is the fertilizer we need to allow God to bring about the organic worship He delights in. He looks at the heart while we often look at what impresses and looks good outwardly.

Personally one area of worship I have enjoyed immensely is the coming together with the Lord's people and experiencing spontaneous worship. True heart felt offerings of thsoe gathered who have spent time with the Lord and want to offer their spiritual sacrifice through psalm, hymn, spiritual song, testimony, word etc... There is something organic about the natural expression of the Lord's people. Each one bringing their spiritual gift to add to the mix. This seems to be an area the Lord is opening up to his church sort of a "knowledge of the Lord" that allows Him to be revealed to his church in ways otherwise not experienced. As each part supplies it's part it provides a healthy exercise for the body and a natural/ organic way for the body to build itself up in the knowledge of the Lord Eph.4:16 Free from artificial fertilizers or enhancements the body has a chance to let the Lord be their focus and energy, it is truely refreshing.

3-d to 4-d

3-d to 4-d

The other night at our fellowship gathering a couple brothers were looking at the comics but not in the usual manner. They seemed to be holding the paper farther away and then moving it closer looking intently at something in the comics. Curiosity got the best of me and asked what they were doing. It turns out it was a drawing that apparently when looked at in a certain way revealed another picture in 3-d. They could not see the 3-d image and let me have a go. Being rather good at this sort of thing It didn’t take me long to see it and began to describe it to them in detail. This made them all the more anxious to see it and they tried harder and harder to see it but to no avail.

I tried to explain to them that they must not focus on the details of the drawing. It seems you need to get out of focus to dial in the 3-d image. Even after explaining this they could not dial in the 3-d image. Another sister and I began dialoging about the spiritual analogy to this. Namely that we are not to look at the things seen but the things that are unseen. In order to dial in the fourth dimension of the Spirit world we must not focus on the details of this third dimension. This seems to be a theme in the scriptures in with many different layers.

There is the layer of affection. Paul mentions that we are to set our affections on things above not on the things of the earth Col. 3:2. According to the dimension principal above if we focus our affections on the things of this earth we won’t be able to dial in our affections for the spiritual heavenly dimension. This is confirmed by Paul in his admonishment to mortify or crucify the affections and lusts which were a characteristic of the gentiles / pagans (1Thes.4:5, Col.3:5. Rom. 1:29). It seems by focusing intently on passions / lusts for things here we cannot dial in the passion for the 4th dimension.

Then there is the layer of seeing. Paul mentions in Corinthians that we look not at the things which are seen but at the things which are not seen (2Cor.4:18). This gave the early Christians hope in the midst of severe persecution. Stephen demonstrated this while being stoned. He focused on the things that were not seen rather than his being stoned and the unseen dimension opened up to him and he saw Christ standing there. (Ac.7). This is paralleled very well with our drawing that contains the hidden 3-d image. The desire to see the 3-d image must supersede our natural desire to look at the physical drawing itself. This gives the order for the eyes to go out of focus and begin dialing in the 3-d image. The eye is conditioned to focus on what is in front of it it must be re programmed so to speak to begin moving in and out of focus to dial in the image. This corresponds to how we must be reprogrammed or born again by the spirit to begin to have our faculities subject to the things of the spirit rather than the natural.

Then there is the layer of honor. Jesus said he received not honor that came from men Jn.5:41. He then goes on to say to these religious leaders that could not believe because they received honor one from another rather than the honor that comes from God alone Jn.5:44. This seems to indicate when we focus on receiving honor from each other from man it affects our ability to give / receive the honor that is for and from God alone. This in turn affects our faith and belief as we are focused on what man thinks. Again Jesus mentions in Luke 16:15 that that which is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God. While man is trying to justify their positions to each other God knows our hearts. This is another area that needs to be reprogrammed by the Spirit in our lives if we are to dial in the dimension of the kingdom.

It seems the realm of the natural is quite contrary to the realm of the spiritual. Paul mentions that the natural man cannot receive the things of the spirit for they are foolishness to him 1Cor.2:14. Given these principals clearly set forth in the scriptures it is amazing how the church has put so much effort in appealing to the natural senses of man. This is very well portrayed in the book “Pagan Christianity?” by Viola and Barna. There is the construction of elaborate buildings that were designed to create a sense of awe and wonder. There is the elaborate liturgy which is intended to draw people into a sense of participation. Then there is all the religious icons and vestments intended to create an atmosphere of the holy etc…. there is the creation of a clergy to represent God to his people. Christ and Paul specifically said we are the temple and it is not made by hands etc… there is this continual striving to try and make a place for God to rest . the Psalmist has aptly said “unless the Lord builds the house they who labor labor in vain” Ps.127:1. Paul makes it clear that we are his place of habitation Eph.2:21,22.

If we want to see into the spiritual dimension it stands to reason we need to stop focusing on the natural or present dimension. We must set our affections on the things that are above where Christ sits. Only then can we get out of focus so to speak enough to focus on what is not readily seen. As Christ said if we really want to pray we need to go into our closet and shut the door. The implication seems to be there needs to be a shutting out of the physical to focus on the unseen. Mary seemed to learn this lesson as she began to focus on the “one thing” looking to Christ alone. May we follow her example.

The future church

The other night my wife taped a message by a famous author and speaker on a message of what the future church would be like. This being a subject we are interested in we both sat down and watched it the other night. There was no real definition given of what the church is so I guess we weren't too surprised when we heard things that he was describing that seemed to have little relevance to who she might be. There were many good points made in his message but we sensed there were many contradictions in what he was saying.

For instance one of his points was that leaders according to Eph.4 are to equip the body that the body may do the work of the ministry. then later he made the comment that some are more annointed to do the work of the ministry and others have jobs that help support these annointed ministers. We paused the message and said what? And how does this seperation between the clergy and laity bring in the unity of the faith described of in eph.4? He went on to describe how the future church will have the youth involved. By involved he seemed to indicate active in the ministry of the meetings which without a definition of the church seemed to be where the church was. The youth are going to be involved in the worship, as ushers and even as parking lot attendants. Another pause on the tivo. And we said to each other and how is this equipping the church for the work of the ministry? Later one of the points was purpose driven which related to the mission going outward.

I guess we wouldn't have been so shocked except this was coming from a guy who speaks at many of the huge church conferences and churches around the world. We didn't hear him say anything of what God's eternal purpose is for the church. It was all about what we should be doing or involved in etc....

So what is my take on the future church? She is a bride without spot or wrinkle. She hasn't always been that way. God is perfecting her through manifold trials and tribulations. she is and was created to be a habitation for God and God is a habitation for her. There will be no clergy laity in this church. it has different functions and giftings but the individual members are not identified by these but by there relationship to the other members and to Christ.

In 1980 the U.S. Olympic hockey team defeated the Russians in what is arguably the greatest upset in sports history of the last century. These amatuerers defeated the best pro players in the world. I knew one of the U.S. players. At one point lived within 2 blocks of his family. was in the same grade and school of his older brother. played hockey with his brother and his dad was my track coach. So I knew this guy. To say I was surprised when they beat the Russians was an understatement. There was no way these young guys should have beat the Russians.

The difference was the coach. He got the players to function as a team which worked together as a unit. He got them to shake their identity with their former team and who they were etc... and had them take on a new identity related to the team. Yesterday read an article about the Yankees as they are going to demolish the old stadium. One of the players that played with Mickey Mantel talked about him. He said he was the best guy in the club house he motivated and encouraged the younger players. At one point the team said to Mickey hey you are the captain. He replied I don't know how to be the captain. They said just keep doing what you are doing. He said well I can do that but I know nothing about being a captian. I thought how prophetic. This is what the future church will look like. Lost in the character and fruit of Christ but unaware of individual giftings and titles etc... How can there be a unity of the faith when we hold onto so many other identities? There must be a shaking of all the old identity for this unity to bring the church together as a team or body that becomes the habitation of God.

Seeking Wisdom

Pro 18:1 Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.

This verse seems to go in two different directions depending on which translation you read. A few like the king James presents it in a positive light as if those who desire wisdom seek it digently and are willing to separate themselves to have this objective viewpoint in regards to it. The other view is one that separates themselves due to their desire to discover themselves and have a disdain for true wisdom.

Most of the modern translations and paraphrases take the second interpretation as well as most of the commentaries. It seems to me to make more sense to take the first. Probably because I can relate to it ha! Actually there are two other instances in this chapter 18 that have two verses that contrast each other so it would fit the pattern here.

At any rate you could support either view from the scriptures. The first view does create a problem for the organized church that puts so much stock into being in the meeting for the wisdom teaching etc… and to miss the meeting is anything but meddling with wisdom. Today’s church is so focused on a service mentality that their mentality of gathering is one where the body receives. This seems to be the opposite of the scriptures in the n.t. where the body comes together to share in the one anothering. Much of the work of the lord comes from spending time in the secret place where the Holy Spirit does his inner work. Then when the body comes together the Lord is able to minister out of the ministry of the individuals who have spent time with him shut up so to speak to hear his voice. So separating oneself is to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and spending time to hear that still small voice. It gives us an objective view of our situations thus enabling us to drink in this wisdom of the Lord.

We see all through the scriptures where God calls individuals to separate themselves from their oikos and situations and calls them to a walk of faith many times alone. God called Abraham away to go to a far country to look for the city that He alone was building. Joseph was called away from his family and into Egypt. Moses was led away into the desert away from his familiarity.

God seems to be doing the same thing today. Calling / leading many out of the organized church and unto Himself. In the process many are leaning on Him in the wilderness. Learning to hear His voice and learn His ways. God’s ways are very different than mans He might want us to wait while our inclination might be to find a way to do something.
Of course if any take this path they will be challenged to not forsake the assembling:

Heb 10:24-25 and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works; not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting one another; and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh

It is interesting that the very verse these good intentioned brethren use to try and keep us from separating ourself is one that depicts the body as a one-anothering gathering. Let us consider one another and exhort one another. In most gatherings today there isn’t an opportunity to exhort or lead out to share what one may have to encourage the brethren as that task has been replaced by a professional class.

Once one has gotten away from the service mentality and spends some time getting the Lord’s vision for the church it becomes obvious He wants to be the pastor and desires the body to do the ministry. Every part becomes necessary as the Lord is not partial towards a few select individuals. Sharing becomes more important than receiving. The body grows as each part exercises and does its part. Just as a natural body begins to atrophy if it doesn’t exercise the local body of believers needs to participate in the ministry of the one anothers if it is to grow and be healthy.

The Lord's Table

Last weekend we had the opportunity to have a sister Ruth Saap visit our fellowship. She came for a few days and shared some revelation on the Lord's table. It was very interesting and many came away with a profound sense of revelation regarding just how deep the mystery goes. She demonstrated the wine by using several clusters of grapes and shaking them before dropping them into a collinder for mashing. Everyone took turns mashing the different colored grapes. It was a vivid picture of how we are crushed with the Lord and out of that crushing comes the sweet fruit that is what the Lord is after.

After the crushing and tasting of the juice of the grapes there was the grinding of the wheat. We all talked about how many times the wheat is broken down so that the vital nutrients can be assimilated into the body. the sybolism of the individual grapes and wheat kernels being mashed/crushed to where they lost their identity is very revelatory. After the wheat was ground several times there were certain ingredients that were added to the wheat powder to clump and give it flavor. the demonstration shows how the Lord is the one who does the grinding adding of the oil, water and salt etc..... he provides the necessary ingredients for the wheat to become bread that is nutrious for the body. the dough is left without yeast the Lord doesn't want it to become puffed up or inflated. when heated it becomes a tasty flat bread with a little bit of a nutty flavor.

during the various stages of the demonstration there was a lot of discussion on how this related to the way the Lord works within the corporate body.

What is a waypoint

I'm just finishing a project for a utility company that took a year. It entailed doing a gis survey for the electrical grid of a local utility co-op. Basically it involved mapping the electrical poles, boxes and meters with what is called a mapper. it is a handheld computer that takes a mapping grade gps point for the location and inventory for the assemblies of the devices. The end result is a digital map that can be printed out with layers showing the various circuits, the direction of the flow of power and the detailed makeup of the structures involved.

A waypoint is the gps location that is taken. It provides a point with a location for longitude and latitude that can easily be located with a gps device. while on the project the correlation to spiritual pricipals became very real. Waypoints are usually coordinates that identify a point set in physical space that show longitude and latitude and sometimes altitude. Above the earth it cold entail time also as one of the factors.

The scriptures mention how the natural creation points or reveals something of the spiritual. It's interesting how the deeper we look into the natural creation the more spiritual it seems to be. for instance scientists now believe there are 11 dimensions.

Abraham was looking for a city whose builder and maker was God. while sojourning to the promised land he often stopped and built an alter and offered sacrifices to God. these could be looked at as waypoints along the way.

These times Abraham had with the Lord became points he could recall and remember, instances where the Lord spoke with him concerning the journey the Lord had called him to.
